Engaging Faculty

OK, we need to kick this forum off. I'll start with something that is on my mind. If you wish to respond to this, please add a comment to this post.

It seems like one of the main themes from the meeting was communication, especially with faculty. It's important that the faculty understand the support roll we play for them. We want them to see us as partners in the education of their students.

I heard one idea that I think we are going to implement right away. I love the idea of offering a "textbook scholarship" to a few departments every semester. These "scholarships" could we awarded to students that they feel deserve the scholarship and would cover the textbook costs of one student for one semester. The departments could select a student based on scholarship, hardship, or whatever criteria they desire.

Textbook "scholarships" could be awarded to departments that have turned in their textbook requests on time. Or, they could awarded to departments we are trying to enhance our relationship with. There may be other reasons we may want to award one of these "scholarships" to any particular department...who knows.

I was thinking that in order to award the "scholarship," the department chair would have to at least sign a form that the winning student would bring to the bookstore in order to "claim the scholarship." This way at least the chair would be involved and see the bookstore's "good works." Hopefully he would engage all of the faculty in the department in the selection process.

Theoretically, the academic side of the university would see our efforts and better understand our desire to be of support to them and students. What do you all think of this idea? Is anyone doing this? Does anyone have other ideas on how to better tell our story to faculty?

CSI Presentation Photos #2

CSI Presentation Photos #1

I wanted to share the CSI Team presentation (I think some other photos may surface a bit later):

Good afternoon, all.

I just wanted to let you all know that I am here and would like to hear from you all.

Please let me know when and if any of you have implemented any ideas that were discussed in Scottsdale. I would really like to know how they worked.

Happy Monday.

Following up with an idea.....

Hello, we're all just back from ICBA in Scottsdale. I know I had fun and I am still a bit worn out by the experience. I'm excited about what I learned and more hopeful for our industry.

As we wrapped up the last day with our presentations, there was a suggestion and some discussion about how we could continue the collaborative efforts from the conference. There was concern expressed that once we go home, much of our newly acquired knowledge, and more importantly, enthusiasm would dwindle and fade into our collective forgotten past.

We discussed the possibilities of creating some sort of blog to continue the discussion and to provide a place where we could let others from our group share in their successes. I thought I would just go ahead and create this blog in an effort to support this idea.

My hope in creating this blog is that it will somehow gain traction and that all of you will be enthusiastically willing to post content. Please feel free to post thoughts, ideas, problems and successes. As we all do so, we can be a support group for new ideas and celebrate successes together. We can also continue to strengthen bonds as colleagues in our industry.

If you haven't received an invitation to participate, and would like to do so, please feel free to contact me directly and I will set you up.

It was a pleasure meeting all of you in Scottsdale. The weather was beautiful and the learning opportunities were exceptional. Let's keep this ball rolling. Speaking for myself, I hope to keep my connection to each of you strong and to keep my ability to continue learning from each of you intact.

Thanks!
